Claire Carlson, “Rural America Did not Push Donald Trump to Victory in 2024”:

This data speaks for itself: Trump won because Democratic turnout in the core counties of major cities crumbled. Yet the urban resentment toward rural America is back.

@JohnBrady Yep. The GOP did not win this election. The Dems lost it. They simply did not convince people to show up. Which is mind blowing to me.

David Walbert

I thought that was a good one too.

Pratik

But still the rural turnout went up or stayed the same. What will it take for rural voters to not for a person like Trump? Have they ever thought about sitting an election out if not voting for the Dems?

jabel

@pratik Oh it would take something unprecedented to get rural folks to vote for Democrats in this era. I took the message of the data to be, “Democrats, your problem is not rural people. You lost millions of your own voters this time.”

jabel

@JohnBrady I wondered about that also! And, relatedly, what would be the inflationary effects of mass deportations?

Pratik

@JohnBrady Let’s stop wondering and let’s sit back and dare Republicans to do what they promised. Then blame everything that follows on things they did.

jabel

@pratik Yeah, seems like we’re all lab rats in this big experiment now.
